US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that a blockade of Iranian ports will come into effect on Monday, as part of broader efforts to prevent Iran from exporting oil.
Speaking to reporters late Sunday in Washington, Trump confirmed the plan to impose restrictions on Iranian ports and said additional countries are working alongside the United States to limit Iran’s ability to sell oil on international markets.
The president also noted that several oil tankers are currently heading toward the United States to secure energy supplies, reducing the need to rely on shipments passing through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Trump reiterated that his administration’s objective remains unchanged: Iran must not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons.
At the same time, he signalled that Washington may review its financial contributions to the NATO, again expressing dissatisfaction with the alliance. He argued that the United States contributes vast sums amounting to thousands of billions of dollars, to support NATO, while not receiving sufficient support in return when needed.
However, Trump acknowledged that NATO member states are now more willing to align with the United States, adding that this reduces the risks previously associated with such cooperation.
