Warner Bros has delayed The Batman: Part II once again, moving the release of Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated sequel from October 2027 to 18 February 2028.
The latest postponement extends a series of delays that have affected the project since it was originally scheduled to premiere in 2025. By the time the film reaches cinemas, nearly six years will have passed since The Batman debuted in March 2022.
According to industry reports, the newest delay is linked to a wider reshuffling of Warner Bros’ theatrical release schedule. The changes come as the company’s proposed acquisition by Paramount, valued at approximately 110.9 billion dollars, continues to await regulatory approval in several jurisdictions, including the European Union, the United Kingdom and Japan. The transaction had initially been expected to close later this year.
To coincide with the announcement, director Matt Reeves released a 35-second camera test showing Robert Pattinson slowly turning toward the camera while wearing Batman’s iconic cowl, offering fans a brief new look at the sequel.
The October 2027 release slot originally reserved for The Batman: Part II will now be occupied by The Great Beyond, a new science fiction film directed by J.J Abrams and starring Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega. The Batman sequel’s new release date places it over the US Presidents Day holiday weekend, a period that has previously hosted several major blockbuster releases.
Production on The Batman: Part II officially began last month. Pattinson returns alongside Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Jim Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. Colin Farrell is also reprising his role as Oswald Cobblepot, although the actor has indicated that the Penguin will appear in only two scenes.
Several casting reports remain unconfirmed. Sebastian Stan has been linked to the role of Harvey Dent, while Scarlett Johansson is reportedly in talks to play Gilda Dent. Charles Dance has also been reported as a likely addition to the cast in the role of Christopher Dent, Harvey’s father.
The sequel has faced multiple setbacks over the past several years. Earlier delays were attributed to the Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes, followed by the extended development of Reeves’ screenplay. The prolonged production timeline has also complicated the broader plans for DC Studios, as James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe is still preparing to introduce its own version of Batman in The Brave and the Bold, which remains in development.
Despite the latest delay, filming is now underway, with Reeves expected to use the additional time to complete post-production before the film’s revised 2028 release.
