The company operating the airport said that the total annual passenger count measured so far is now only 9.4 per cent behind the record year of 2019, surpassing previous expectations.

The number of passengers at Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport exceeded 6.68 million in the first half of the year, which is 26.6 per cent higher than the same period last year and more than the total number of passengers in the entire year of 2021, according to a statement from Budapest Airport Zrt. on Monday.

The company operating the airport said that the total annual passenger count measured so far is now only 9.4 per cent behind the record year of 2019, surpassing previous expectations. The statement added that June was the fourth consecutive month when the airport’s traffic exceeded one million passengers. After a transitional global slowdown at the beginning of the year, air cargo started to grow again from spring onwards, resulting in 91,452 tonnes of cargo being handled at Budapest Airport in the first half of the year. Reaching the annual dream target of 200,000 tonnes seems achievable in the near future, the company stated.

Over the past four and a half years, Budapest Airport and the entire airport community have received numerous recognitions due to a series of development projects worth more than 100 billion HUF.

Among these recognitions, in early March, the Airports Council International (ACI) awarded Budapest Airport the best European airport in the category of airports handling 15–25 million passengers. This is one of the most prestigious awards that an airport can receive. ACI surveys more than 30 performance indicators each year to assess the quality of services provided by 400 international airports worldwide. Based on this, Budapest Airport achieved outstanding results in every quarter last year; the scores surpassed all previous values and those of regional competitors. Passenger satisfaction levels were consistently above 4 points on a 5-point scale throughout the year, and significantly higher than in the busiest year of 2019, Budapest Airport stated.

In mid-March, Budapest’s Airport won the ‘Best Airport in Eastern Europe’ title for the tenth time in a row, awarded by the Skytrax international air transport research organisation. Furthermore, after a three-day audit, the airport’s rating was raised to four stars by the organisation. In April, Liszt Ferenc International Airport became the first airport in Europe to receive the international WELL Health-Safety Rating, confirming that all necessary steps are taken to ensure the safety and health of passengers and staff.
