The right-wing populist European Parliamentary group Patriots for Europe has put out a statement after Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary’s election loss on Sunday, 12 April.
The Patriots write:
‘A strong signal of support from the Patriots Group following Hungary’s elections, coupled with sharp criticism of EU influence and political alliances.
The Patriots Group expresses its support for Fidesz and Viktor Orbán and underlines the importance of defending national sovereignty and conservative values in Europe. The group highlights the role of Orbán and Fidesz as key representatives of democratic self-determination and traditional European values within the European Union and frames current political developments as a setback for forces advancing this course.
At the same time, the European People’s Party showed an increasing alignment with left-wing forces, which is a departure from core centre-right principles. The Patriots Group as well expresses their concerns about interference from the European Commission in national political processes, as such developments risk undermining trust in European institutions and the integrity of democratic decision-making.
The Patriots Group is more united than before and determined to intensify its efforts, committing to continue and strengthen the political struggle for sovereignty, prosperity, and freedom for all European nations.’
Patriots for Europe currently holds 84 seats in the European Parliament out of 720. The group was founded in July 2024 by PM Orbán, following the European Parliamentary elections in which his Fidesz Party won 11 out of Hungary’s 21 total EP seats. Less than two years later, however, Fidesz lost the parliamentary election to Tisza by a constitutional supermajority.
