US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday night that Washington would deploy an additional 5,000 troops to Poland. The statement came weeks after the Pentagon announced the withdrawal of 5,000 American soldiers from Germany following Trump’s dissatisfaction with Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s position regarding the war in Iran and the crisis surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
‘Based on the successful Election of the now President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, who I was proud to Endorse, and our relationship with him, I am pleased to announce that the United States will be sending an additional 5,000 Troops to Poland,’ Trump wrote on Truth Social on 21 May.
The announcement was welcomed by many politicians on the Polish right. President Karol Nawrocki said in a post on X that he would ‘continue to stand guard over the Polish–American alliance,’ calling it a ‘vital pillar of security for every Polish home and for all of Europe.’
Karol Nawrocki on X (formerly Twitter): “I stand and will continue to stand guard over the Polish-American alliance-a vital pillar of security for every Polish home and for all of Europe.Good alliances are those based on cooperation, mutual respect, and a commitment to our shared security. I thank U.S. President… / X”

‘Good alliances are those based on cooperation, mutual respect, and a commitment to our shared security,’ he added. Thanking Trump for his ‘friendship toward Poland’, Nawrocki concluded by stating that the ‘security of Poland and the Polish people is my top priority!’
Law and Justice (PiS) politician Antoni Macierewicz described the deployment as a ‘major decision’, framing it as a direct result of cooperation between Trump and Nawrocki. ‘For Tusk, this is a serious political blow,’ Macierewicz added.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk and members of his administration had yet to comment on the announcement at the time of writing, although the move has already been widely interpreted as a political victory for Nawrocki amid the increasingly visible tensions between the president and the government.
Since taking office, Nawrocki has repeatedly emphasized the strategic importance of the Polish–American alliance, while Tusk has increasingly focused on strengthening European defence cooperation and reducing Europe’s dependence on Washington amid concerns surrounding the second Trump administration’s ambiguous approach towards NATO.
The divide became particularly visible earlier this year after Trump criticized NATO allies and questioned Europe’s military commitments, triggering a heated public exchange between Tusk and Nawrocki. Tusk accused the president and PiS of political submissiveness towards Trump, while Nawrocki responded by accusing the prime minister of ‘kneeling’ before Berlin and Brussels.
The latest troop deployment therefore carries significance not only militarily but also domestically, reinforcing Nawrocki’s narrative that maintaining close ties with Trump and the Republican administration delivers concrete security guarantees for Poland.
The deployment is also strategically important because Poland has become one of the central pillars of NATO’s eastern flank following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The country already hosts around 10,000 American troops on a rotational basis, alongside major logistical infrastructure, missile defence systems, and equipment stockpiles supporting NATO operations across Eastern Europe. Poland also spends nearly 5 per cent of its GDP on defence—the highest proportion within NATO—while pursuing one of Europe’s most ambitious military modernization programmes.
At the moment, it remains unclear whether the announced forces would consist of troops relocated from Germany or whether an entirely new deployment would arrive in Poland.
UPDATE:
Prime Minister Donald Tusk reacted to the announcement in a post on X on Friday, describing the decision as ‘good news for both Poland and the United States’. ‘I would like to thank everyone involved in this matter,’ he added, including President Nawrocki, ministers, members of Congress, and ‘Poland’s friends in the United States’.
