MÁV Group has begun a comprehensive station renovation programme across Hungary, targeting over 30 locations in 14 counties. The 15-billion-forint project, funded through the company’s own resources and the Hungarian Village Programme, was announced by MÁV CEO Zsolt Hegyi at the launch event in Esztergom.
Hegyi explained that the lack of EU funding has immediately affected railway development projects, prompting MÁV to initiate infrastructure upgrades this summer at Rákosrendező and the Budapest Keleti railway station from its own budget. The newly launched station modernization programme will run until the summer of 2026.
He also mentioned plans to secure a 1+1 billion euro credit line from the European Investment Bank as a future source of development financing. Within the Hungarian Village Programme, 11 new lightweight station buildings will be erected in locations where none existed previously or where old structures had been demolished. Additionally, MÁV’s own funding will modernize more than 20 sites, refurbishing station buildings, waiting rooms, and restroom facilities. Many stations will also see improvements to their surroundings, enhanced passenger information systems, and, where needed, renovated underpasses and stairways. The programme will also include the construction of a completely new stop.
The initiative aims to deliver modern, passenger-friendly stations, enhancing the appeal of rail transport. Hegyi highlighted the restoration of Gyula’s historic railway building, which will regain its pre-World War II appearance after the works are completed.
The first projects began in Komárom–Esztergom County, at Leányvár and Esztergom-Kertváros. In Esztergom-Kertváros, the station will receive a fully accessible layout, a modern air-conditioned waiting room, and upgraded restrooms. Similar upgrades will take place in Leányvár, where both the waiting area and the restroom block will be renewed alongside accessibility improvements.
Local transport is also part of the modernization plan. Between Bajót and Mogyorósbánya, bus schedules will be coordinated with train timetables. Passenger numbers have risen sharply on the Budapest–Esztergom line, growing from 2 million before 2022 to more than 6 million today.
Esztergom Mayor Ádám Hernádi noted that the Esztergom-Kertváros renovation fulfils a commitment made during Minister János Lázár’s visit to the city in February, creating a station that offers dignified and comfortable facilities for passengers.
