Craig Houston, a 53-year-old YouTuber who runs the right-wing channel Craig Houston Talks To with around 100,000 subscribers, was detained by counter-terrorism police at the airport in Edinburgh, United Kingdom as he was returning from holiday in Greece on Friday, 10 July.
He has not been arrested or charged. However, his electronic devices were seized, the BBC reports. They also quote a statement by Police Scotland, which informs the public that Houston ‘was stopped using powers under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000 at Edinburgh Airport’ and that the ‘inquiries are ongoing’.
‘Under Schedule 7, officers can stop and question someone to determine whether they are concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism,’ the BBC article writes.
Houston is a member of the right-wing populist Restore Britain Party, and has been vocal about his criticism of mass migration into the UK. In May, he specifically pointed out a ‘migrant tent camp’ in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.
The right-wing influencer has uploaded a video about his experience with police at the Glasgow Airport. In it, he states that his electronic devices being seized is preventing him from ‘going about his daily business’. Without the devices, he also lost access to his banking apps, he shared.
He also explained that if a suspect is detained under the anti-terrorism clause, which he was, he has no right to remain silent, unlike during an arrest in suspicion of any other crime. Thus, he was not allowed to pass on questions with a simple ‘no comment’ during his detention.
‘Is it abuse of power? I don’t know. Is it utilizing a law that’s been created in 2000 for another purpose? I think that’s perfectly evident. So, they’re telling you, “We don’t think you are a terrorist. But we’re going to utilize these terrorism act laws to detain you and get access to you, and ask you questions you cannot no comment”…So, it was strange,’ Craig Houston said in his video about his controversial detention by Police Scotland.
