British politician Ann Widdecombe, a Former MP for the Conservative Party and the Immigration and Justice spokesperson for the Reform UK Party, was found dead at her home in Haytor, United Kingdom on Thursday, 9 July. She passed away at age 78.
News of her death was picked up by British media a couple of days after it occurred. The police believes that it was a case of intentional homicide.
A 28-year-old male suspect was arrested on Saturday. Not much information is given about the man to the public. According to the police, his crime was not politically motivated, and he is a white British national.
Widdecombe was scheduled to record a video statement for Channel 5 on 8 July. However, she became non-responsive to messages from the TV crew in the early afternoon. While her body was not found in her home until the next day, investigators believe that is when the deadly attack took place. That is consistent with the medical examiners’ findings, who claim that she had been dead for about 24 hours by the time her body was transported to the hospital.
Nigel Farage Pays Homage to Ann Widdecombe
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has posted a video of himself laying a commemorative wreath at a memorial site for Widdecombe in her home village of Haytor.
In the video, Farage also states:
‘It seems extraordinary on a beautiful day like this to think of not only the untimely, but violent, barbaric manner of her death. She was a remarkable individual…She was the fiercest proponent of free speech I believe I have ever met. She believed we had the freedom and the right to say things that insulted each other.’
He also recalled how influential the late Widdecombe was in her decision to leave the Conservative Party and join the Brexit Party ahead of the 2019 European Parliamentary election, when she felt that her old party was not delivering on the promise of exit from the European Union after the 2016 referendum.
The newly formed Brexit Party ended up winning the 2019 EP election in the United Kingdom—the last EP election the country has participated in.
