The Hungarian Geographical Museum has announced an online reading campaign designed to transport readers to faraway landscapes and foreign cultures through the lens of Hungarian and international travel literature. The initiative invites participants to discover the wonders of exploration from the comfort of their own homes.
The challenge, which runs until September 15, requires participants to read at least three selected volumes. According to the museum’s announcement, one of the chosen works must be by Dénes Balázs, the renowned geographer and museum founder, while another must be a travelogue written by a female author of the reader’s choice.
To help participants source their reading materials, the organizers recommend the Elbidárium collection as well as the museum’s official website, where downloadable publications by Dénes Balázs are also accessible.
Upon completing the reading challenge, participants are asked to submit a brief written review for each book, detailing what they liked and disliked, and offering a reasoned recommendation for the general public.
Reviews should be sent to the organizers via email at regisztracio@foldrajzimuzeum.hu. Among those who read and review at least three books, valuable book packages will be raffled off. Additionally, the Hungarian Geographical Museum will host every participant for an exclusive guided tour during the Museums’ Autumn Festival series.
The professional partner for the initiative is the Elbida Project, a cultural mission born from a private collector’s passion. The project aims to widely introduce enthusiasts to the rare and precious volumes of Hungarian or Hungarian-language travel literature published before 1945 that are held in its collection.
