ELTE and the University of Szeged have been named Hungary’s top universities in the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities, both placing in the 501–600 range. Four Hungarian institutions made the world’s top 1,000, led globally by Harvard, Stanford, and MIT.

Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) has once again demonstrated its strong position in Hungarian higher education. In the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), ELTE and the University of Szeged emerged as the highest-ranked Hungarian institutions, both placing in the 501–600 range, the Hungarian news site Origo.hu reports. Four Hungarian universities in total made the list of the world’s top 1,000 institutions.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities has been published since 2003 and is regarded as one of the world’s leading university ranking systems. Since 2009, it has been compiled by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, an organization independent of any university and government agency.

The ranking evaluates universities based on a range of objective criteria, including the number of scientific publications, the proportion of highly cited researchers, and scientific awards received by alumni and faculty members.

ShanghaiRanking examines around 2,500 higher education institutions worldwide, with the top 1,000 included in the publicly available ranking.

ELTE and SZTE Lead the Way among Hungarian Universities

As in previous years, four Hungarian universities were included among the world’s top 1,000 institutions in 2026. This year, ELTE shares the top spot in Hungary with the University of Szeged, with both universities having been ranked in the 501–600 range.

Semmelweis University placed in the 701–800 range, while Budapest University of Technology and Economics was ranked 901–1,000.

Meanwhile, little has changed at the top of the global rankings. Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts retained its first place, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Eight American and two British universities are featured among the world’s top ten. The top 100 spots, however, are considerably more diverse, with institutions from 18 countries represented. According to the ranking’s compilers, Asian universities have been particularly successful in strengthening their positions in recent years. The full 2026 ARWU ranking is also available by country and institution.
