The University of Debrecen’s Clinical Centre has reached another milestone in surgical innovation after its Department of Surgery successfully performed its first two minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomies (MIVAT), the university’s press office announced on Monday.
The MIVAT (Minimally Invasive Video-Assisted Thyroidectomy) technique differs from conventional thyroid surgery by allowing surgeons to remove the affected part of the thyroid gland through a small 1.5-2 centimetre incision. Using specialized endoscopic optics and precision instruments, the procedure significantly reduces surgical trauma while improving visualization of delicate anatomical structures.
According to the university, the main advantages of the technique include less tissue damage, faster recovery, more accurate identification of nerves and blood vessels, and improved cosmetic results, as the resulting scar is barely visible.
Director of the Department of Surgery Dezső Tóth said expanding the use of endoscopic and video-assisted techniques across multiple surgical disciplines remains a strategic priority alongside the institution’s successful robotic surgery programme.
He described the introduction of the first MIVAT procedures in the region as clear evidence that the clinic’s specialists are applying internationally recognized, state-of-the-art surgical methods. He added that minimally invasive approaches not only improve surgical safety but also enhance patients’ quality of life and reduce the length of hospital stays.
Members of the university’s endocrine surgery team received specialized training in Pisa, Italy, widely regarded as the birthplace and leading international centre of the MIVAT technique. During the programme, the surgeons acquired the theoretical knowledge and practical experience required to safely introduce the procedure in Debrecen.
Associate Professor and Head of the endocrine surgery team Ferenc Győry said the video-assisted technique provides surgeons with magnified, high-definition images of critical anatomical structures displayed on a monitor. This allows for more precise preservation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which controls the vocal cords, as well as the parathyroid glands.
The University of Debrecen said the addition of the MIVAT procedure further strengthens its endocrine surgery programme and will offer carefully selected patients with thyroid disorders access to a less invasive and more cosmetically favourable treatment option that meets international standards.
