Alex Soros, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Open Society Foundation, was among the many prominent figures in the international political and business world to share their excitement about Prime Minister-Elect Péter Magyar of Hungary’s election victory on Sunday, 12 April, which granted his Tisza Party a constitutional supermajority.
Soros wrote: ‘The people of Hungary have taken back their country! A resounding rejection of entrenched corruption and foreign interference,’ on the social media site X.
Users, through the site’s community notes feature, have pointed out that the NGO network funded by the Soros organization routinely makes efforts to influence elections in various countries.
Another billionaire, however, had a much less favourable view of the recent election outcome in Hungary. World’s richest man and owner of the X platform Elon Musk replied to the tweet, crisply writing: ‘Soros Organization has taken over Hungary.’ He added an asterisk to the beginning of that statement, denoting that he is relaying his perceived subtext of the original message.

However, he himself got a community note of his own, claiming that the Tisza Party does not take donations from foreign NGOs.
Elon Musk is a vocal supporter of outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s policies, especially his family support policies. In December 2024, after President Donald Trump’s victory in that year’s presidential election, Musk and Orbán even met in person at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida.
Meanwhile, Musk is also a vocal and consistent critic of the Open Society Foundation’s promotion of open border policies.
