Chinese President Xi Jinping called for greater international cooperation on artificial intelligence (AI) governance on Friday, saying the technology should serve shared global interests and must not become the exclusive sphere of influence of any single country.
Speaking at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, Xi said AI development and regulation require stronger global coordination and more effective international governance mechanisms, according to China’s state news agency.
He also criticized what he described as the excessive expansion of national security considerations in technology policy, saying countries should not place their own security interests above those of others.
Xi said China would expand AI cooperation with a range of international organizations and regional blocs, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Arab League, the African Union, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the BRICS group.
As part of those efforts, he announced that China would make its AI-powered meteorological early warning system available to 30 countries, aiming to improve weather forecasting and disaster preparedness.
According to the conference organizers, this year’s WAIC has attracted more than 1,100 companies and around 1,400 participants, highlighting China’s growing role in the global AI industry.
Huawei is expected to unveil its Atlas 950 SuperPoD artificial intelligence computing system during the event, showcasing the company’s latest advances in AI infrastructure.
China has identified artificial intelligence as a strategic national priority in recent years. Under its science and technology development plan through 2030, AI is among the country’s leading research and innovation fields.
Chinese-developed open-source large language models, including DeepSeek, have also gained increasing international attention, particularly in developing countries, as China seeks to expand its influence in the rapidly evolving AI sector.
