The European Commission on Monday designated ChatGPT as a very large online search engine and Reddit and Roblox as very large online platforms under the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA).
According to the Commission, the designations were made after the operators reported that the services each have an average of at least 45 million monthly users in the EU, reaching the threshold set under the DSA.
The companies will have four months to comply with the additional obligations resulting from their new status. These include assessing and mitigating systemic risks arising from their services and algorithmic systems, including risks related to the dissemination of illegal content and potential negative effects on minors, users’ physical and mental well-being, fundamental rights, electoral processes and public security.
The designations also give the European Commission investigative powers to assess the functions underlying the services and, where appropriate, related systems.
The Commission will oversee compliance with the legislation in cooperation with the digital services authorities of Ireland and the Netherlands, where the relevant service providers are registered.
With Monday’s announcement, the European Commission has so far designated 28 very large online search engines and platforms under the EU’s Digital Services Act.
