A serious incident occurred in Budapest, Hungary, in the early morning hours of Sunday, 30 August, after a fight broke out near the Pontoon nightclub, with a man in his 40s sustaining life-threatening injuries, the Hungarian news site 24.hu reports.
Pontoon is a riverside terrace bar over the Danube River by the Budapest landmark Széchenyi Chain Bridge.
Several people reported witnessing an altercation at the entertainment venue. According to their accounts, two patrons began arguing before the confrontation escalated into a physical fight. During the incident, members of the group involved allegedly used pepper spray, causing one of the men to partially lose his vision and balance before he fell onto the Danube embankment and suffered serious injuries.
Pontoon’s management emphasized that neither its staff nor its security personnel used pepper spray during the altercation. The venue also stated that the accident did not occur on its premises, but further away on a publicly accessible section of the riverbank.
24.hu has contacted the National Ambulance Service regarding the incident. According to the service, a man in his 40s was treated at the scene before being transported to hospital with serious injuries and in life-threatening condition.
The Budapest Police told the news site that at approximately 1:23 am on 30 August, they received several reports that a man had fallen onto the cobblestones of the embankment at the Pest end of the Chain Bridge. He was subsequently taken to hospital with serious injuries.
To clarify the circumstances of the incident, police launched an investigation on suspicion of group disorderly conduct. Detectives have interviewed witnesses and taken steps to obtain surveillance footage. Police declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing investigation.
This is not the first incident involving a fall into the Danube near the riverside entertainment venue.
In 2019, a man fell onto the rocks near Pontoon, while in 2025, another man fell after leaning against a barrier and died from his injuries. At the time, Pontoon stressed that, contrary to rumours, the 2025 accident had not occurred on its premises, but farther away on a public section of the riverbank, just like the most recent incident.
