The MEP reacted to Ferenc Gyurcsány’s statements made in a radio interview. Deutsch declared that the Democratic Coalition President had publicly admitted that as opposed to his and the European Commission’s claim that there were legal problems between Hungary and the European Union, or that the European Union development funds owed to Hungary had been withheld due to legal issues for years, was a lie.

‘Last week in a radio interview, Ferenc Gyurcsány publicly admitted that the entire Hungarian Left, together with the European Commission, had been obviously lying for years about whether there were any legal problems between Hungary and EU institutions‘, Fidesz MEP Tamás Deutsch said, stating that Hungary is being attacked for political reasons.

Speaking at a press conference in Jászberény after his lecture at the local St Stephen Sports Primary and Secondary School on European Day, the MEP reacted to the statements made by Ferenc Gyurcsány, the president of the Democratic Coalition, in a recent radio interview. MEP Deutsch stated that Gyurcsány had admitted publicly that his and the European Commission’s claim that

the European Union development funds owed to Hungary had been withheld due to legal issues for years was in fact a lie.

According to Deutsch, the real confession by Gyurcsány was that the Hungarian Left and the European Commission were attacking Hungary for political reasons the whole time. He added that the left-wing Hungarian Members of the European Parliament and Hungarian domestic politicians are obviously ‘scheming against their own country’ in an attempt to grab power. Deutsch quoted Gyurcsány, who in his radio interview said: ‘The EU actually told Hungary you will get money if you dismantle NER [the acronym of the Hungarian version of System of National Cooperation, used as a synonym of Fidesz governance.]’ Deutsch Tamás added: ‘All of this, this political blackmail, is dressed up in a faux legal cloak.’

Tamás Deutsch went on to say that Gyurcsány’s public admission means that ‘we are dealing with another Gyurcsány speech,’ referring to the infamous Őszöd speech of the then Socialist PM, and added that this public admission proves that those who have claimed that the Hungarian Left is mobilising all its energy to work against its own country have been correct all these years. He cited Ferenc Gyurcsány again, who also had this to say in the aforementioned interview: ‘Yes, we worked to make the European Union impose conditions that break down or at least weaken the Orbán system.’

Deutsch mentioned that this Monday, 3 April was the one-year anniversary of the latest Hungarian parliamentary elections. Hungarian citizens made a clear democratic decision to once again ‘drive out the dollar left,’ giving a mandate of over a two-thirds majority to Fidesz and KDNP.

The institutions of the European Union and representatives of the left cannot accept the democratic decision of the Hungarian people. That’s why they attack Hungary politically, working together for political reasons to override the democratic expression of the Hungarian citizens in the parliamentary election…This is simply unprecedented, shameful behaviour,’

he added.

The MEP also emphasised that the ‘Gyurcsány admission’ raises numerous questions, and these questions must be examined in the coming days as thoroughly as possible.
