Eötvös Loránd University has launched a flagship artificial intelligence programme aimed at expanding research, education and innovation, as officials say Hungary already ranks among the world’s top users of AI technology.

Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) has launched a new flagship programme focused on artificial intelligence, aiming to strengthen Hungary’s role in the development and application of AI technologies.

At the opening event, Government Commissioner for Artificial Intelligence László Palkovics said that according to recent research Hungary already ranks among the world’s top 20 countries in AI usage. Among Central and Eastern European countries, he added, Hungary has the highest proportion of people using AI tools.

Palkovics said maintaining this position is important, but the country should also aim to move further ahead, noting that there is a realistic opportunity to do so. He emphasized that artificial intelligence is increasingly present in all areas of life, and it matters whether Hungary simply receives the technology as a tool or actively contributes to its development.

To support this goal, the Hungarian government has created a national AI strategy and established the Hungarian Artificial Intelligence Council. According to Palkovics, ten priority areas have been identified where AI could be applied effectively in Hungary, including culture, energy, agriculture, education, healthcare and public administration.

Looking ahead, he highlighted several milestones for the future of AI development in Hungary. These include launching the domestic production of humanoid robots, creating a centre of excellence for oncology, introducing self-driving vehicles and establishing new data centres.

ELTE Rector Lénárd Darázs said the university approaches artificial intelligence in a comprehensive way. Beyond technological research, the programme also incorporates social sciences, humanities and psychological perspectives.

He noted that the newly launched AI initiative is already the university’s third flagship programme. Recently, ELTE also introduced initiatives focused on improving students’ digital competencies and promoting sustainability.

According to the Rector, these flagship programmes are not entirely new projects but build on areas where the university already has significant achievements. Artificial intelligence was chosen as the third focus area because the institution believes the technology will remain a defining part of the future and must be integrated into higher education as well.
