Woke political language is becoming ever more complex, as illustrated by recent remarks from Canadian progressive MP Leah Gazan. The acronym ‘MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+’, which she used during a statement criticizing Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney, quickly went viral, garnering millions of views on social media.

The language of woke is among the hardest—even through a Hungarian lens—to navigate on our globe, as illustrated by a recent statement from Canadian leftist progressive MP Leah Gazan. Speaking about a planned budget cut affecting Indigenous organizations, Gazan introduced a new acronym—‘MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+’—which instantly went viral on social media, garnering millions of views and even being reposted by US billionaire Elon Musk.

Thanks to American right-wing political commentator Matt Walsh, we now know what the 15-letter acronym means: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual. It is not yet clear what missing and murdered people have to do with the LGBT community—Gazan herself did not offer a clear explanation—but it seems that, as Walsh noted, ‘murdered is now a queer identity’. ‘This is the kind of innovation we get from Canada,’ he concluded.

To add some background to the story: Leah Gazan, an MP of the New Democratic Party (NDP)—which served as the minority partner of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal-led government—criticized the Liberal administration, now led by Mark Carney, for cutting the budget of Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) and Crown–Indigenous Relations by $7 billion while at the same time—in accordance with the country’s NATO commitments—investing ‘billions into the military industrial complex’. Gazan accused Carney of ‘ignoring their legal obligations to end the ongoing genocide against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people’.

Gazan pointed to the findings of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, conducted between 2016 and 2019, which concluded that violence against Indigenous women amounts to genocide—a highly debated outcome of the investigation led under the most progressive government in the country’s history. The inquiry itself, and the legitimate concerns over the safety of Indigenous women and girls, were appropriated by the LGBTQ community, politicizing a serious social crisis, as it has occurred repeatedly over the past decade.

The MP further criticized Carney for ‘backtracking commitments to MMIWG2S+’ through defence projects labelled as ‘national interest projects’. ‘Is the safety of Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people not in the national interest?’ she concluded.
