The 71st UEFA Champions League/European Cup final will be played tonight, 30 May, at the Puskás Arena in Budapest, Hungary. The Hungarian capital will be the 29th city to host the final for the premier European club competition.
About 10,000 lucky fans of each of the participating teams, Paris Saint-Germain from France and Arsenal from England, will be inside the stadium to witness the great showdown. However, thousands more travelled to Budapest to take part in the celebrations should their favourite team win.
Those fans will have the chance to follow the game on a giant outdoor screen at the UEFA Champions Festival at Heroes’ Square, one of the most prominent sites in the city for fans for the UCL Final weekend.
At Heroes’ Square, you can find all the things a fan would want for their game experience, such as the aforementioned giant screen showing the game, Heineken beer bars, and an astroturf mini football pitch—and even more. If they are so inclined, they can get themselves a new haircut at a Gillette barber shop, or they can get into the party mood with DJs supplying music for the fans from a giant stage.
Keeping things giant, the visitors can take photos of a giant UEFA Champions League trophy replica, a giant Adidas UEFA Champions League ball, or the life-sized team photos of the two teams, Arsenal and PSG.
Visiting the Champions Festival, Arsenal certainly have an advantage in the number of fans visiting Budapest for the final, based on the turnout there. People donning the jersey of the Gunners outnumbered those with PSG shirts about 5:1 when Hungarian Conservative went on site, Saturday afternoon. In fact, even Barcelona jersey fans gave PSG fans a run for their money—take this for what it’s worth.
However, the defending UCL champions from Paris remain the favourites for the big game.
This is reflected in the tips fans of the two teams gave us for the final. An older gentleman, who claimed to be a fan of Arsenal since his birth in 1958, told us that he expects Arsenal to win on penalties after a 1–1 draw.
Meanwhile, a much younger PSG fan was a lot more brazen in his prediction. His guess was a 4–0 win for Paris Saint-Germain. His confidence is not completely unfounded: last year, PSG delivered the largest margin of victory in UCL final history, a 5–0 win over the Italian side Inter Milan.
Whether the predictions prove correct or not, football fans around the world will soon find out when the action gets underway at the Puskás tonight.
