Centre for Budapest Transport (BKK) will increase the frequency of several public transport services and introduce additional capacity across the city ahead of Saturday’s UEFA Champions League Final in Budapest, according to a statement released on Wednesday.
The final, which will be played at the Puskás Arena between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal FC, is expected to attract around 60,000 supporters. Hungarian police previously said both clubs had sold more than 17,000 tickets each, while tens of thousands more fans are expected to arrive in the capital without tickets.
BKK said the city’s public transport network will operate with significantly expanded capacity in the days surrounding the final. The M2 and M4 metro lines, along with tram line 1, will run every two to three minutes during peak periods. The M1 metro line will also operate more frequently for four days to serve the Champions Festival area at Heroes’ Square.
On Saturday alone, around 100 additional vehicles, including buses, trams and metro trains, will be deployed. Direct services will also operate between Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport and fan zones across the city.
From Friday to Sunday, the 100E Airport Express and 200E bus services will depart every two to three minutes. Authorities will also temporarily reopen Terminal 1 at the airport for three days. Dedicated 100E services will run from the terminal to the city centre before the match, while after the final both the 100E and 200E buses will stop at Ferihegy railway station to serve Terminal 1 passengers.
Police will reserve the airport expressway exclusively for public transport vehicles between 8am and 5pm on Saturday.
Supporters holding match tickets will be allowed to travel free of charge across Budapest’s entire public transport network, including the 100E Airport Express, from Friday through Sunday.
Authorities also warned of major traffic restrictions around the stadium and other event locations, including City Park, Heroes’ Square and the MTK Sportpark on Kerepesi Road. Some areas will only be accessible on foot on Saturday.
BKK urged both residents and visiting supporters to use public transport, especially the metro network, during the event weekend.
