According to the decision of World Athletics (WA), Budapest will be the venue for the first-ever World Athletics Ultimate Championship in 2026. WA President Sebastian Coe said that the decision was made partly because of the success of last year’s World Athletics Championship. In 2026, the Hungarian capital will also host the Champions League final.
For the first time in its history, Hungary will host the most prestigious club football match, which has previously taken place in 32 stadiums across 28 cities in 15 countries. The Puskás Aréna, inaugurated in 2019, will host its third European cup final following the 2020 Super Cup match and last year’s Europa League final.
In an interview with the website of Puskás Akadémia, the prime minister expressed that Hungarian football is not part of the entertainment industry, but rather part of the Hungarian people’s lives and their national identity.
Csányi also set out an ambitious goal: he wants to bring the UEFA Champions League final to Budapest, in 2026 at the earliest.
