A LEGO recreation of Mihály Munkácsy’s Ecce Homo, one of the masterpieces from his famous Christ Trilogy, is being built in Debrecen, the Déri Museum announced on Monday.

From 11 November to 13 December, students from several local elementary schools and interested families have been working together to assemble the monumental mosaic, using 155,000 LEGO bricks to reinterpret Munkácsy’s iconic painting.

The completed artwork, standing nearly 2.5 metres tall and almost 4 metres wide, will consist of eight panels. It will be unveiled to the public on 13 December in the Déri Museum’s dome hall, opposite the Munkácsy Room. According to the museum, the creation will be the largest LEGO artwork ever constructed in Hungary, celebrating the power of playful learning and community collaboration.

The project aims to inspire children’s interest in museums and the arts while demonstrating how creativity can bring people together. It is a joint initiative of the Déri Museum, LEGO Manufacturing Ltd in Nyíregyháza, the Wesselényi Miklós Technical School and College’s Tekerd! group, the Debrecen Education District, the Nyíregyháza Vocational Training Centre, and Debrecen schools—including classes with hearing-impaired and speech-disordered students.

Students are building the image using a colour and tone mapping technique developed by the Tekerd! group, assembling small image units that are later mounted onto panels by a professional team of young specialists.

The project combines art, education, and inclusivity, offering participants a chance to engage with Hungary’s cultural heritage in a creative, hands-on way.
