The HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network will host the 2026 annual conference of Academia Europaea (AE), one of Europe’s most prestigious scientific organizations, next October in Budapest. The announcement was made during AE’s 2024 conference held in Barcelona, HUN-REN reported on Thursday.

According to the institution’s statement, winning the right to organize the event is a major opportunity to present Hungarian scientific achievements to the global research community.

At the Barcelona conference, academician László Lovász, research professor at the HUN-REN Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics, received AE’s highest distinction, the Erasmus Medal, in recognition of his outstanding and enduring international scientific work. In his ceremonial lecture, Lovász spoke about the beauty of mathematics.

The Hungarian delegation, led by HUN-REN President Balázs Gulyás, also attended the event. Since 2024, HUN-REN has been a supporting member of Academia Europaea, collaborating with the organization to host and co-organize professional events and conferences. The partnership will reach a milestone in 2026 with the Building Bridges conference—AE’s annual meeting—set to take place in Budapest from 12–16 October, with active involvement from AE’s Budapest Knowledge Hub.

Founded in 1988, Academia Europaea is Europe’s largest academy based on individual membership, counting around 6,000 scholars, including 160 Hungarian researchers and approximately 90 Nobel laureates. The organization covers all scientific fields, from the humanities and social sciences to the natural sciences, and since 2023 has served as a scientific advisory body to the European Commission.
