Hungary’s future competitiveness depends on knowledge that transcends borders and is built on talent, said Ferenc Krausz at the foundation stone ceremony of the Frontiers Campus in Budapest.
The project, initiated by the Frontiers Foundation with government support, aims to create more than just a research centre. According to Krausz, the campus will function as a full scientific ecosystem, connecting generations and covering the entire spectrum of science, from talent development to cutting-edge research and practical applications.
He stressed that investment in science must not be subject to political cycles. Supporting excellence, he argued, should be treated as a national minimum to ensure long-term prosperity for future generations in the Carpathian Basin.
The campus is designed to nurture curiosity and guide it toward discovery. Krausz described the foundation stone as a commitment to the future, setting a clear direction and standard for generations to come. The goal is to ensure that knowledge created in Hungary becomes a lasting national asset.
A key ambition of the Frontiers Campus is to integrate top-level research with education. While Hungary already hosts strong research institutes and successful talent programmes, Krausz said this will be the first place where leading scientists and young talents work under one roof, creating a direct pathway from education to innovation.
The development will have two main pillars: one in Budapest and another in Transcarpathia, symbolically emphasizing that scientific life in the region extends beyond the Hungarian capital. The initiative aims to create an environment where fundamental questions can lead to groundbreaking discoveries.
Krausz also highlighted the importance of international standards in science. The campus is intended to operate at the highest global level, attracting top researchers from abroad while encouraging Hungarian scientists to return home. Partnerships with leading international institutions will further strengthen its position.
The project also incorporates medical innovation. The Molecular Fingerprint Research Centre (CMF), led by Krausz, will be integrated into the campus. Its work focuses on using molecular data to better understand the human body and enable early detection of diseases, shifting healthcare toward prevention rather than treatment.
At the ceremony, Viktor Orbán joined Krausz in placing a time capsule at the site. The capsule contains early concept documents, key decisions behind the project, and personal messages from members of the foundation’s board.
The foundation itself was established in 2025 and is guided by an international board of distinguished scientists, including Nobel laureates and leading researchers. Its mission is to support excellence across disciplines—from natural sciences and medicine to engineering and agriculture—while attracting top talent to Hungary at every stage of the research career.
With the Frontiers Campus, Hungary aims to position itself as a global hub for innovation, where education, research, and real-world applications converge to shape the future.
