A video shared on X appears to show an incident in Birmingham, United Kingdom, in which a white man is accosted and then attacked by three black men before being detained by a policewoman immediately afterwards. The man, apparently mistaking the officer for another attacker, allegedly attempted to punch her and is now facing charges of assaulting a police officer.

Just two months after the release of the bodycam footage of the Henry Nowak murder stirred international outrage, another video, this time of the Birmingham police seemingly engaging in egregious misconduct against a white man, has drawn a lot of attention on the internet.

This event took place in the early morning hours of 21 June in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

A young white man was being accosted by three black men on the street. One of the black men slammed the victim to the ground. Once grounded, another attacker approached to take a swing at him.

However, when a policewoman came and broke up the encounter, she immediately grabbed the apparent white victim and pinned him against a closed storefront. The white man, presumably mistaking the officer for one of the attackers, attempted to punch her, but was ultimately subdued.

The video of the incident was posted by the user @Re_mi_gra_tion on the social media platform X on 1 July, and it has garnered 8 million views and 96,000 likes. World’s richest man and X owner Elon Musk was among those who left a comment under the video, simply writing ‘wtf’.

Users were outraged by their perception that UK police assumes that white citizens are the perpetrators in incidents involving people of colour, regardless of the circumstances, a disturbing phenomenon shown in the aforementioned Henry Nowak case as well.

The social media backlash prompted the Birmingham Police to respond.

They put out two tweets. In the first post on X, they sparked additional outrage, as they wrote: ‘We would ask that footage is not further shared to allow the legal process to take its course.’

In their follow-up post, they share more information about the incident. They write: ‘We are aware of footage showing the arrest of a man after a disorder on Broad Street at 1.30 am on 21 June. Officers found a group of men fighting. As the incident was dealt with, an officer was punched. One man was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer.’

The man charged with assaulting a police officer is no doubt the white man, the apparent initial victim whose identity is concealed.

Birmingham City police decided to lock down the comments on their X posts after a barrage of users accused them of anti-white racism. However, a community note is displayed on their latest post about the incident, which states: ‘Police arrested the victim of an assault and allowed his attackers to flee.’
