Citizen journalist and internet personality Nick Shirley, who made his name by exposing the government-funded daycare fraud scheme in Minnesota, has taken his operations to another Democrat stronghold state, New York.
In his latest expxposé, he claims that ‘Governor Hochul [of New York] has been taking donations from these daycare fraudsters in NYC who receive millions of your taxpayer dollars to operate “adult daycares”,’ as he wrote in an X post on Thursday, 13 August.
Most people on the right very much welcome the work of Nick Shirley, which has already led to Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota—Kamala Harris’ running mate on the Democratic ticket in the 2024 US presidential election—dropping out of his reelection bid for governor. Shirley has been one of the rising stars among right-wing figures in the second Trump era.
Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky, however, seems to be less impressed with his work.
‘Hard to take Nick Shirley seriously until he starts calling out [Speaker of the House Mike] Johnson, [Senate Majority Leader John] Thune, and Trump for funding the daycare fraud in every Omnibus and CR bill with no guardrails,’ he wrote in a quote tweet to Shirley’s video.
Thomas Massie on X (formerly Twitter): “Hard to take @nickshirleyy seriously until he starts calling out Johnson, Thune, and Trump for funding the daycare fraud in every Omnibus and CR bill with no guardrails. https://t.co/FF8nz2RqFP / X”

Representative Massie may be overestimating how much political capital he has here.
He is already on his way out of Congress, as he lost his primary in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District to Trump-backed Ed Gallrein by 9.8 points back in May, after spending $34 million on his campaign—a record amount for a losing primary candidate.
During his time in office, he has distinguished himself as the most frequent critic of President Trump in the Republican caucus, voting against key legislation such as the One Big Beautiful Bill despite the narrow GOP majority in the House.
Meanwhile Shirley, as we wrote above, is a fresh, new, and universally loved figure on the right with a massive social media reach and impressive accomplishments for his young age. His content niche, exposing fraud in Democrat-led state government’s welfare programmes, is widely embraced by all factions of the American right as a necessary and good cause.
Nick Shirley clapped back to Massie, writing, ‘In other words “Why can’t a 24 yr old solve all the government’s spending problems?” You people in DC are a large part of the problem. All you do is complain and whine on 𝕏 while your job is to actually work for us. I’ve exposed and saved America billions. What have you done?,’ on X.
This post by the young right-wing journalist has received 130,000 likes on the social media platform, compared to Massie’s 33,000 likes that he got for his attack on Shirley.
