The Lake Balaton region has won the ‘Best Family Destination in Europe’ title at the International Travel Awards, according to tourism organization VisitBalaton365.
In a statement published on Thursday, VisitBalaton365 said the award serves as international recognition that the Balaton region has evolved into one of Europe’s most comprehensive and liveable family-friendly tourism destinations.
The organization noted that years of targeted destination development have helped transform Balaton from a traditional summer holiday area into a four-season tourism destination offering family experiences throughout the year. The award also reflects the region’s successful efforts to expand its tourism appeal beyond the peak summer season.
Founded in 2015, the International Travel Awards recognizes outstanding achievements in the international travel, tourism and hospitality industries. The awards honour high-quality services, innovation and exceptional visitor experiences around the world.
According to VisitBalaton365, the winners are selected by an international professional jury. More than 120 entries from 52 countries competed in the 2026 edition across various tourism and hospitality categories, making the Balaton region’s recognition a significant international achievement.
The region now offers a broad range of activities for families beyond its beaches, including cultural programmes, eco-tourism and outdoor recreation. Castles, museums, visitor centres, adventure parks, animal parks and nature-based attractions are available year-round, while the Balaton Uplands and the Kis-Balaton area provide additional opportunities for visitors seeking nature experiences.
VisitBalaton365 highlighted the region’s safe, family-oriented environment and the continuous development of quality tourism services as key strengths. During the summer season, certified accommodation providers and beaches play an important role, with the ‘Blue Wave Flag’ quality system helping to guarantee high service standards.
