A Gripen fighter jet operated by the Hungarian Defence Forces crashed near Szolnok on Monday morning for reasons that remain unknown, Prime Minister Péter Magyar said.
The pilot successfully ejected from the aircraft and survived the crash. Preliminary information indicated that no one was injured and no civilian infrastructure was damaged.
Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi said the pilot had ejected and had done everything possible to ensure that the aircraft came down on military property. He added that the pilot was alive and that the circumstances of the accident were being investigated.
Ruszin-Szendi said he was travelling to the scene together with the chief of staff to provide further information about the incident.
The Hungarian Defence Forces operate Gripen fighter jets based at Kecskemét, while the military also has an air base near Szolnok.
The cause of Monday’s crash has not yet been established.
