The zoos of Pécs and Osijek will be transformed into year-round tourist destinations through a cross-border European Union-funded development programme, the Baranya County Government announced on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the two-year joint project between the two major zoos on the Hungarian–Croatian border aims to improve sustainable tourism and enhance visitor experiences under the Hungary–Croatia Cross-Border Cooperation Programme.
The initiative, led by the Osijek Zoo, focuses on infrastructure and digital developments as well as the creation of new cross-border tourism products.
As part of the project, a new rhinoceros enclosure will be built in Osijek, while the existing aquarium and terrarium building will also be renovated.
Both zoos will install multilingual interactive interpretation systems and smart information panels. The programme will additionally include joint tourism festivals, professional workshops and tourism camps.
According to the organizers, the project is expected to increase visitor numbers at both zoos by at least 10 per cent, while also significantly improving accessibility for people with disabilities and boosting regional tourism spending.
The Baranya County Government said the total budget of the project, including developments and related programmes, amounts to 2.1 million euros.
Of that amount, 1.6 million euros will be invested in the Osijek Zoo, while developments worth 120,000 euros will take place at the Pécs Zoo.
