The 9th Slovenian Film Days will begin on Thursday in Budapest with the screening of Slovenia’s Oscar-nominated film Little Trouble Girls (Kaj ti je deklica) by Urška Djukić. The festival’s opening event takes place at Toldi Cinema, followed by a Q&A session with producer Jožko Rutar, organizers announced on Tuesday.
Rutar, born in 1970, originally studied economics before turning to film production after working five years with a dance company. His short films and documentaries have been featured at leading festivals including Cannes, Venice, Locarno, and Rotterdam. Between 2011 and 2016, he served as director of the Slovenian Film Centre.
Little Trouble Girls has already achieved major international recognition, winning the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival, the Best Cinematography Award at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival, and the Best Editing Prize at the Pula Film Festival. It was also featured in competition at the CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival.
The film tells the story of Lucia, a shy 16-year-old who sings in a girls’ choir. Her friendship with the popular Ana-Maria puts her values to the test and disrupts the harmony of the group, while leading her to explore her emerging sexuality.
The programme will also showcase The Playground Is Ours (Igrišča ne damo!) by Klemen Dvornik, which premiered in Locarno and won Best Children’s Film at the Sarajevo Film Festival, along with children’s jury awards in Zagreb and at the Olympia International Children’s and Youth Film Festival in Greece. The story follows Alma, who bands together with her greatest rival to save the neighborhood playground from demolition.
Another highlight is This Is a Robbery! (To je rop!) by Gregor Andolšek, a comedy about Rajkó, a magician who breaks his arm during a performance and finds himself entangled in a chaotic chain of events when his insurance claim is denied due to a bureaucratic error.
The 9th Slovenian Film Days is organized in cooperation with the Slovenian Film Centre, BudapestFilm Ltd, and the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Budapest.
