A new international centre for the research, development, testing, and certification of intelligent new-energy vehicles and energy storage systems is planned in Zalaegerszeg, Hungary. The ZalaZONE Automotive Proving Ground announced the project on Wednesday, highlighting the collaboration between Hungarian and Chinese partners.
The initiative aims to serve markets across America, Asia, and Europe, with key contributions from the China–US Green Fund, Zhongzhi Zhitong Testing Technology Co Ltd, and Autóipari Próbapálya Zala Ltd. According to the signed memorandum of understanding, the joint investment will create a green innovation ecosystem around the ZalaZONE test track, fostering collaboration between East Asian and European automakers and suppliers. The site will also explore broader energy applications beyond the mobility sector.
The partners emphasized their shared goal of accelerating the transfer of research outcomes into industrial production. The planned centre is expected to drive technological innovation in both the automotive and energy sectors while also delivering tangible economic benefits: new jobs, supplier opportunities, and increased international investment in Hungary.
ZalaZONE has reached a new phase of development where commercial activities are becoming as prominent as research goals. To continue growing, the facility aims to deepen partnerships with universities, research institutions, government agencies, and private enterprises across sectors like energy, automotive, agriculture, and defence.
The test track, built on 265 hectares following a 2016 government decision, was designed for the evaluation of electric and autonomous vehicles. Its latest test module was inaugurated in May, reinforcing ZalaZONE’s strategic role in shaping the future of sustainable mobility in Europe.
