Nvidia unveiled a new artificial intelligence chip on Monday that brings advanced AI capabilities directly to laptops and desktop computers, marking a significant step in the company’s effort to reshape personal computing for the AI era.
Speaking in Taiwan ahead of the annual Computex exhibition, Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang introduced the RTX Spark PC chip, which is expected to begin shipping this autumn.
Huang said the processor is the result of three years of collaboration with Microsoft and forms part of a broader initiative to ‘reinvent the PC’ around artificial intelligence.
Unlike many current AI services that rely heavily on cloud infrastructure, the RTX Spark chip is designed to run AI agents locally on personal computers. Huang added that the chip was developed in partnership with Taiwanese semiconductor company MediaTek.
Industry analysts said the technology could fundamentally change how consumers interact with AI systems. Co-founder of Counterpoint Research Neil Shah described the RTX Spark as a potential turning point for personal computing, arguing that private AI agents running directly on devices could become commonplace in households over the coming years.
The launch also highlights Nvidia’s growing ambitions in the PC and processor markets. Alongside the RTX Spark, Huang showcased the company’s Vera central processing unit, a processor specifically designed for AI agents and advanced AI workloads.
According to Nvidia, early adopters of the Vera CPU include OpenAI, Anthropic and SpaceX.
During an earnings call in May, Huang said the Vera processor would allow Nvidia to compete in what he described as a $200 billion market opportunity. He identified the product as a major future growth driver for the company, which remains the world’s most valuable semiconductor manufacturer.
A significant portion of Huang’s keynote address focused on Taiwan’s role in the global technology industry and the accelerating adoption of AI technologies. Last week, he announced plans to invest approximately $150 billion annually in Taiwan, describing the island as the centre of the AI revolution.
Huang also pushed back against concerns that artificial intelligence could reduce demand for software engineers. He argued that AI tools increase productivity and ultimately encourage companies to hire more developers rather than fewer.
‘The number of software engineers is actually increasing,’ Huang said, rejecting predictions that AI would lead to widespread job losses in the sector.
The announcement comes as technology leaders gather in Taipei for Computex, one of the world’s largest technology trade shows, which runs from 2–5 June.
