Hungary has already broken its 2024 tourism record, welcoming over 18.2 million guests by 2 December. With balanced domestic and international visitor numbers, Budapest and Lake Balaton remain top destinations, and strong holiday-season bookings point to another successful year ahead, Visit Hungary has shared.

Hungary is closing out another remarkable year for tourism, according to the latest announcement from Visit Hungary, a non-profit organization for tourism industry research.

The organization told the Hungarian state news agency MTI that Hungary had already broken its annual tourism record set in 2024 within the first 11 months of the year. As of 2 December, accommodation establishments had registered 18.227 million guests, surpassing last year’s total for the entire year. Visit Hungary expects strong visitor numbers to continue through the traditionally busy Christmas and New Year’s Eve period, setting the stage for 2025 to be another successful year in the history of Hungarian tourism.

Between January and early December, guest traffic was up 7 per cent compared with the same period last year. Accommodation revenue rose 12 per cent, while restaurant turnover increased by 9 per cent.

The distribution of visitors was well-balanced across the country, with domestic and international travellers vacationing in the country in roughly equal numbers in the year now ending. Budapest attracted 38 per cent of all guests, while the Balaton region remains one of Hungary’s most popular rural destinations, offering appealing programmes throughout the year.

‘The steadily growing number of visitors demonstrates that our carefully planned developments, along with Visit Hungary’s data-driven, experience-focused campaigns, are delivering tangible results and raising awareness of our country,’ the subsidiary of the Hungarian Tourism Agency wrote in their public statement. Tourism continues to be Hungary’s most dynamically developing sector, they added.
