KSH Population Report: Decline in Deaths in September Outpaces Decline in Births

Population loss slowed this September compared to the same month last year, the Central Statistical Office revealed. However, the number of new marriages has also shown a declining trend.

The number of births fell by seven per cent in September compared with the same month in the previous year, while deaths dropped by 11 per cent in Hungary, according to preliminary data published by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) on Friday, 27 October.

Meanwhile, the number of marriages decreased by 9.8 per cent in the same time period. A total of 7,222 children were born in September, while there were 9,111 deaths recorded. Altogether, 6,948 couples got married. The natural population loss was 1,889 people, compared to the loss of 2,529 people in September 2022.

A total of 64,655 children were born between January 2023 and September 2023,

2.4 per cent fewer than in the same period of last year. Altogether, 93,600 people died between January 2023 and September 2023, 7.7 per cent fewer than in the same period of last year. Also, over the course of the first nine months of this year, 40,111 couples tied the knot, 25 per cent fewer than in the same period of last year.

There were 9.0 live births and 13.0 deaths per thousand inhabitants, the former 0.01 lower than in the January-September 2022 period. Meanwhile, the death rate was 0.1 of a percentage point lower.
