After being elected to the European Parliament, Italian Antifa Ilaria Salis walked free on 14 June, as Hungarian police released her from house arrest due to the immunity granted to MEPs. This news is both outrageous and terrifying, given the devastation Salis and her associates are believed to have caused, destroying the lives of innocent people in Budapest.

The Hungarian police have released Italian Antifa member Ilaria Salis, who was accused of attacking several innocent people in Budapest in 2023 as part of a far-left group, causing them serious physical injuries.

The release was possible because Salis stood as the top candidate in the European Parliament elections for the Italian far-left green alliance Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra (AVS) and was elected to the EP. The far-left party selected Salis, who had no prior political experience, as their leading EP candidate following international backlash over the allegedly ‘harsh’ conditions she was kept in while in custody in Hungary.

Being elected to the EP served as a get-out-of-prison-free card for Salis.

This is both outrageous and terrifying, especially when you consider the destruction Salis and her associates are believed to have wrought in Budapest. One of the victims, László Dudog, gave an interview to the Italian newspaper Il Giornale, which was also reported by Hungarian Conservative.

He explained the horrific details as such: ‘my fiancée and I were attacked and injured with bars, batons and knives by those criminals…They smashed my head with bars. My fiancée was stabbed twice in the leg.

It’s a miracle we’re alive’.

He said he did not know why the far-left attackers chose them: ‘No one, upon seeing us, could discern whether we were aligned with the right or the left. We walked around, holding hands and chatting, just like many other couples.’

As he mentioned, the ambush caught them completely off guard, and he did not even have time to glimpse at the attackers’ faces. ‘The initial blows to my head were so severe that I immediately lost consciousness. I only recall the paramedics administering first aid before I was transported into the ambulance, and the policemen questioning me about the incident.’ The victim stated that his fiancée was stabbed in the thigh, pepper-sprayed, and kicked in the face. ‘Even now, a year later, she still has a bone fragment protruding beneath her eye.’ The man added that the attack resulted in the complete paralysis of the left side of his face.

Still, the Italian far-left thought it was a good idea to nominate a ‘politician’ like Salis for such a significant position. However, Salis did not get away with it completely. She spent more than a year in prison awaiting trial between February 2023 and May 2024. She was then placed under house arrest after posting a bond of 16 million HUF (€40,000). So although now she could go free, her bail bond will likely be forfeited. Thus, with 15 months spent in prison and the payment of €40,000 in bond, some semblance of justice was served after all.
