The Hungarian civil organization Menedék – Hungarian Association for Migrants, an NGO aiming to aid refugees arriving in the country, has launched a new website called Working-Right.hu.

The information on the website is very much labour force-oriented, with statistics about the largest industries and companies by number of employees, as well as which industry is dealing with a work force shortage currently. It lists the Hungarian Post, Magyar Posta Zrt as the country’s number one employer, followed by Volánbusz and Hungarian state railways MÁV Zrt.

According to the website, there are 70,000 foreign workers employed in Hungary today.

According to the 2022 census, the number of foreign nationals living in Hungary (who are not necessarily active in the local labour force) is 217,945. Of those, 98,262 reside in the capital city of Budapest. With the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war in the neighbouring country, that number has likely risen mostly due to the arrival of Ukrainian refugees.

The newly launched website also provides accurate information on workplace regulations and the rights of foreign workers. It also has a full landing page with information on what documents and certifications a foreign national is required to have to be able to legally work in Hungary.

Hungary has recently adopted a uniquely strict but fair legal framework regarding foreign workers, which we have described in detail previously.

The ‘Hungarian Model’ — Guest Workers Come, Work, and Go Home

The gist of the Hungarian regulation is that guest workers must leave the country immediately as soon as their work permits expire.
