Head coach Marco Rossi has named his squad for the 2024 European Championship, taking place between 14 June and 14 July in Germany. Hungary will be facing the hosts Germany, Switzerland, and Scotland in the group stage. This is the first time the Hungarian Football National Team has qualified for three consecutive European Championships.
Earlier this month, UEFA decided to heed the request of the national team head coaches and allowed them to nominate 26 players in their respective roster, as opposed to the originally proposed 23. Marci Rossi made his final decision on all 26 available spots. However, he also named five reserve players, who are advised to remain on standby in case a player needs to be replaced due to an injury.
Some minor surprises were included in Head Coach Rossi’s team selection.
Defender Attila Fiola, who missed out on most of the season due to a series of injuries—in fact, he is currently out with an injury as well—still made the cut. While he only played 12 league games for his club Fehérvár FC this season, he is one of the most experienced players in the squad. He is one of the six players (besides Ádám Nagy, László Kleinheisler, Ádám Lang, Péter Gulácsi, and Dénes Dibusz) who were included in the squad in both previous European Championships, in 2016 and 2021 as well. Out of these six players, Kleinheisler also did not get regular playing time in his club, the Croatian side Hajduk Split.
There is still no clear first-choice goalkeeper for the squad. Dibusz, the captain of the reigning Hungarian champion Ferencváros played throughout the qualifiers, performing very well, while Gulácsi was recovering from his complicated knee injury. However, Gulácsi has since returned and took back his starting spot in goal for the top German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig—Marco Rossi has a difficult choice to make ahead of the opening game against Switzerland on 15 June.
National Team captain Dominik Szoboszlai is evidently in the squad,
despite his declining performance at Liverpool. However, he was key in Hungary’s qualification, and his talent and potential cannot be disputed. The other key player trusted to deliver goals is winger-striker Roland Sallai of SC Freiburg. Sallai and Szoboszlai are the two highest-scoring players on the Hungarian roster, scoring 12 goals each for their national team.
