Swietelsky will rebuild the 13.6-kilometre railway section between Almásfüzitő and Komárom for 36.3 billion forints, Transport and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy announced on Facebook on Tuesday.

The minister said the construction tender had been successfully completed, paving the way for an upgrade that will allow faster rail services on the Budapest–Győr main line, part of the Budapest–Vienna railway corridor.

The project is part of the Baross Gábor Railway Development Plan and is intended to improve the speed, safety and passenger experience on a section of the line that currently cannot accommodate trains travelling at up to 160 km/h.

Swietelsky submitted the lowest bid and will carry out the construction work for 36.3 billion forints with financing from the EU Cohesion Fund.

Vitézy noted that while the design speed of the Budapest–Vienna main line is higher than the legally permitted speed for cars on almost the entire route between Budaörs and the Austrian border, the section between Almásfüzitő and Komárom currently has a speed limit of 120 km/h.

In addition to raising the maximum speed, the project is intended to make stations more comfortable for passengers, improve timetable reliability for services towards Austria, Győr and other cities in western Hungary, and increase both railway and road safety.

The entire section will be rebuilt and the railway switches will be equipped with heating systems.

A 1.6-kilometre section near Szőny station will undergo track realignment to allow trains to reach 160 km/h. The railway will be shifted slightly to achieve the required curve geometry.

Near Szőny, the level crossing on Main Road 1 will be replaced by a road overpass. Three smaller level crossings will also be eliminated, with access maintained through a new road connection and the new road overpass and pedestrian and cycling underpass.

High platforms will be built at Almásfüzitő-felső station and Szőny stop to provide barrier-free access to trains. Almásfüzitő-felső will receive a pedestrian underpass, while Szőny will have a pedestrian overpass equipped with lifts.

Pedestrian and cycling underpasses will also be constructed at two locations: near the Almásfüzitő cemetery and at Stadion Road in Szőny.

A P+R and B+R parking facility will be established at Szőny between Main Road 1 and the railway line.

Following the successful procurement procedure, a construction contract is expected to be signed shortly. The development is scheduled for completion by 2030.
