Hungary’s parliament could vote as early as Wednesday on a government proposal to reverse the country’s planned withdrawal from the International Criminal Court, reaffirming its commitment to international justice and human rights.

Hungary’s parliament may approve legislation as early as Wednesday reversing the country’s planned withdrawal from the International Criminal Court after the government submitted the proposal under an expedited procedure.

The bill, introduced to parliament on Monday along with a request for exceptional treatment, would repeal the 2025 law initiated by the previous government that authorized Hungary’s exit from the court.

Hungary to Notify UN of ICC Withdrawal After Parliamentary Approval

According to the proposal, signed by Justice Minister Márta Görög, maintaining Hungary’s participation in the ICC is essential for upholding international peace and security, as well as protecting human rights through the prosecution of the world’s gravest crimes before an international judicial body.

The bill’s justification states that participation in the ICC is not merely a matter of foreign policy or international law, but also a question of values, representing a commitment to human dignity, victims’ right to justice, and the rejection of impunity.

‘The proposal is not only the reversal of a previous decision that ran counter to the values of the international community, but also a declaration that justice, human dignity and international cooperation continue to serve as guiding principles for Hungary,’ the document says.

The legislation would annul the law passed in 2025 under the government of Viktor Orbán, which argued that Hungary rejected the political use of international organizations, especially international courts.

Prime Minister Péter Magyar has asked parliament to debate the bill under an accelerated procedure. If a majority of lawmakers approve the request, both the parliamentary debate and final vote could take place on Wednesday.

The government had already ordered the preparation and submission of the proposal in a decree published Friday in the official Hungarian gazette.
