Shifts in Employment Patterns: Hungary’s Workforce Statistics for November

The Central Statistical Office released its data for the month of November 2023. The press release pointed out that the number of employed individuals reached 4,736,000 in Hungary.

In November of the previous year, the number of employed individuals aged 15–74 increased by 18,000 compared to the same period in 2022, reaching a total of 4,736,000, as announced by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) on Friday, 5 January.

During the period of September to November 2023, the total number of employed individuals in Hungary was 4,755,000.

While the number of those working in the domestic primary labour market increased by 34,000, and those working abroad increased by 13,000, the number of publicly employed individuals decreased by 6,000 compared to the previous year, as reported by the KSH.

Among those aged 15–64, 4,629,000 were considered employed, with a corresponding employment rate of 75.2 per cent. The number of employed males remained essentially unchanged, constituting 2,435,000 individuals, with an employment rate of 79.0 per cent. Among females, the number of people employed increased by 31,000 to 2,194,000, resulting in an employment rate of 71.3 per cent. In the age group of young individuals (15–24 years), 270,000 were active in the labour force, with a rate of 27.3 per cent.

For the so-called prime working age population (25-54 years), the employment rate remained practically unchanged at 88.4 per cent, while for the older age group (55-64 years), it increased by 3.0 percentage points to reach 70.0 per cent.

In November 2023, the number of unemployed individuals was 207,000, with an unemployment rate of 4.2 per cent.

During the September to November 2023 period, the number of unemployed individuals aged 15–74 increased by 29,000 to reach 212,000, and the unemployment rate increased by 0.5 percentage points to 4.3 per cent compared to the same period the previous year.

Among males, the number of unemployed individuals was 113,000, with their unemployment rate increasing by 0.6 percentage points to 4.3 per cent. As for females, their number of unemployed individuals was 99,000, with an unemployment rate increase of 0.5 points to 4.2 per cent. The number of unemployed individuals aged 15–24 was 43,000, with an unemployment rate of 13.8 per cent. This age group constituted 20.4 per cent of all unemployed individuals.

By the end of November 2023, according to administrative data from the National Employment Service, the number of registered job seekers decreased by 3.2 per cent compared to the previous year, reaching 226,000 individuals, as reported by the KSH.
