Keleti Railway Station in Budapest will close for a month-long renovation beginning Monday, announced MÁV Group CEO Zsolt Hegyi. He called the project the most significant maintenance investment of the year, stressing that decades of delays in track repairs had led to slow orders, longer travel times, frequent breakdowns, and unpredictable operations.
Hegyi explained that from this year onward, MÁV is focusing on overhauling the most deteriorated junctions rather than patching them up. Following the summer works at Rákosrendező, the upgrades at Keleti will replace and repair critical infrastructure that has long slowed down train traffic. He described the effort as an investment in faster, more reliable, and safer rail transport.
Passengers are advised not to rely on routine routes during the construction period and to check updated schedules before travelling. During the four weeks, traffic will be reorganized through other Budapest transfer points, with details and alternative options available on MÁV’s official site.
According to MÁV Inform, long-distance trains will temporarily use Nyugati Railway Station, Budapest-Kelenföld, and Kőbánya-Kispest as their final stops, where metro connections are available. This affects services on the Győr, Pécs, Hatvan–Miskolc, and Újszász–Békéscsaba lines.
Commuter trains from Hatvan and Újszász will generally terminate at Kőbánya felső, where a new transfer hub will be set up. From there, passengers can connect to the metro via frequent MÁV shuttle buses to Puskás Ferenc Stadion or by taking tram line 37, which runs every four minutes through II János Pál pápa square to Blaha Lujza square.
