The Budapest Transport Company (BKV) and the Hungarian Transport Association (MKSZ) will host a public event on Sunday at the Urban Public Transport Museum in Szentendre, offering free programmes to celebrate Transport Culture Day. As part of their ongoing commitment to sustainable, safe, and civilized travel, BKV has once again joined the national campaign in partnership with the Hungarian Automobile Club.
This year’s event features free admission to the museum’s permanent exhibition, housed in a historic 1914 BHÉV train depot. Visitors can explore the evolution of public transit in Hungary, try their hand at driving a tram via a simulator, and discover how complex the job of a tram driver can be.
The event aims to raise awareness about sustainable and responsible transport. The museum’s unique industrial heritage collection includes around 60 vehicles, primarily trams, but also buses, trolleybuses, vintage HÉV (suburban railway) cars, and even a prototype of the Ganz metro.

Highlights include the iconic UV tram and its trailer, which have been in operation in Budapest since 1956, and the rare Hungaroplan prototype nicknamed ‘Csufi’.
Visitors can also test a modern tram simulator—pre-registration online is required—and experience a mobile safety exhibition brought by the Hungarian Automobile Club. The ‘Barracuda’ simulator lets participants try different driving scenarios, while other devices simulate what happens during a car rollover or crash. A special pair of ‘drunk goggles’ gives users a first-hand understanding of the dangers of driving under the influence.
For added nostalgia, BKV will operate a free shuttle service using an open-top Ikarus 630 bus between Batthyány Square in Budapest and the museum. This service is available only to those who register in advance online.
