‘The main theme of the competition was to create a fitting representation of the Hungarian national anthem, one of the deepest sources of Hungarian national unity, in the place where its lyrics were written.’

The following is an adapted version of an article originally published in Hungarian in Magyar Krónika.

Gergő Turi (TRISKELL Épülettervező Kft) won first prize in the design contest for the National Anthem Memorial.

The main theme of the competition was to create a fitting representation of the Hungarian national anthem, one of the deepest sources of Hungarian national unity, in the place where its lyrics were written.

The committee evaluating the architectural designs sought to ensure that the memorial would embody both respect for tradition and the achievements of future construction, and that the winning design would be a contemporary architectural work that preserves the memory of Kölcsey’s former home with appropriate authenticity, while at the same time fitting harmoniously into its surroundings with its modern, energy-efficient, and clean design.

Among the 39 entries received, some excelled in symbolism, some aimed to restore the original condition, while others stood out for their sensitive and complex solutions that fit in with the location. Overall, the new edifice must simultaneously convey the elevated atmosphere (arising from its function), evoke the former manor house, and find its place in Szatmárcseke.

Awards

The jury recognized the most thoughtful, innovative, and respectable designs with placement awards, special purchases, and purchases.

Gergő Turi (TRISKELL Épülettervező Kft) won first prize for his building design, while the committee awarded second prize to Tamás Emődi-Kiss and third prize to Gergely Sztranyák, Veronika Sztranyák (SZTR studio), and Dániel Varga. The designs by Máté Trabak and Zoltán Trabak were recommended for special purchase, while the designs by Kristóf Attila Juhász, NAPUR ARCHITECT Kft, Puhl és Dajka Építészeti Iroda Kft, and RJZS Architects Kft were recommended for purchase.

The National Anthem Is 202 Years Old

Let us imagine that probably wintry, gloomy January day in the village of Szatmárcseke. The manuscript of the hymn is pretty much finished, all that is left is to clarify and make minor corrections. Kölcsey is sitting in his study, with the fire crackling in the fireplace, the world outside is frozen, only the church bell, the bellow of the cows and the neigh of the horses from the stables behind the manor house can be heard occasionally. He reads the manuscript carefully, crosses out a word here and there, writes another over it, and then copies the whole text onto a clean, blank piece of paper. It is finished—nothing more can be taken away or added. A secretive, mystical moment. Something is born and embodied on paper,’ Magyar Krónika’s editor Ákos Győrffy wrote about the birth of the national anthem earlier.
