The 5 millionth foreign tourist has visited Hungary this year, Visit Hungary has shared, citing the numbers by the National Tourism Data Provider Centre (NTAK). The milestone was reached on 6 May, which is the earliest on record.
Year-on-year, this amounts to a 6 per cent increase in foreign tourists from 2024.
As for domestic tourism, 164,000 Hungarians decided to travel within the country during the Easter holiday. 338,000 in total did so during the entirety of the spring break. During the long weekend around the May Day holiday, 136,000 people vacationed in their home country, Hungary. These periods saw a 20, 27, and 36 per cent increase in the number of tourists compared to the previous year, respectively. The most popular destinations for domestic tourists have been the Mátra–Bükk mountains, the agglomeration of the capital city of Budapest, as well as Debrecen and its neighbouring towns, and Nyíregyháza in the Eastern part of the country.
According to Visit Hungary, the rising number of tourists was partly due to the favourable weather conditions during the cited periods.
They have also shared that the May Day long weekend alone generated 16 billion HUF ($44.6 million) in revenue for the Hungarian hospitality industry, which is a 31-per-cent increase year-on-year. Meanwhile, the countries where most foreign tourists have come from are Germany, Romania, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Austria. Their preferred destination has been Budapest, consistent with previous years.
