More than 100 screenings, including festival award contenders and two Hungarian premieres, will be held across 27 art cinemas nationwide this Sunday as Hungary joins the 10th European Arthouse Cinema Day, organizers announced on Wednesday.

More than one hundred screenings will take place in 27 art cinemas across Hungary this Sunday as part of the 10th European Arthouse Cinema Day, the organizers said in a statement on Wednesday. The continent-wide initiative, now in its tenth edition, will feature simultaneous screenings in hundreds of cinemas throughout Europe.

Eight arthouse cinemas in Budapest and 19 in the countryside will offer a unique selection of films for the occasion, giving audiences the chance to see several titles weeks or even months ahead of their national release. The programme features a wide range of international works, including Italian crime drama, Belgian courtroom cinema, French satire, German psychological drama and Norwegian animation.

Two Hungarian films will be shown in advance of their official premieres: Gábor Herendi’s romantic comedy Passionate Women and Ildikó Enyedi’s Quiet Friend, which won awards in six categories at the Venice Film Festival.

The event opens with the Italian–French crime film Sicilian Letters, a Venice Golden Lion nominee. The lineup also includes the Belgian courtroom drama We Believe You, awarded a special prize at the Berlin Film Festival; the French–Belgian satire Degenerate Holiday, which debuted in Cannes; and The Light, a German–British psychological drama nominated for the top prize in Berlin. Audiences can also watch the documentary Rebuilding Notre-Dame, chronicling the five-year restoration of the cathedral destroyed by fire.

A family title traditionally forms part of the programme. This year it is Arctic Magic, an award-winning Norwegian animated feature created with the involvement of Hungarian artists.

The Hungarian programme is organized by the Art-Mozi Association with support from the National Cultural Fund and the Hungarian Academy of Arts. Full schedules and screening times are available at artmoziegyesulet.hu.

Launched by the International Confederation of Arthouse Cinemas (CICAE) and the Europa Cinemas network, the initiative aims to highlight the diversity of European cinema and the cultural importance of arthouse theatres.
