Two Hungarian nationals are confirmed to be missing following devastating flash floods in Nepal, Hungary’s Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday evening.

The two people have been reported missing to the Hungarian consulate and the Foreign Ministry, while the ministry said it could not rule out the possibility that additional Hungarian citizens were among those unaccounted for.

The Hungarian embassy and the country’s honorary consul in Nepal remain on standby, awaiting inquiries from Hungarian citizens and maintaining contact with local authorities, the ministry said. The Foreign Ministry’s consular information centre is also continuously taking calls.

According to information from Nepal’s tourism authorities cited by the ministry, at least 384 tourists, including 291 foreign nationals, have been reported missing following severe flooding in the country’s Himalayan border region. A further 93 local residents, including 26 police officers, are also missing, the ministry said.

At least 157 people have been confirmed dead in the floods, according to the latest official reports.

The Foreign Ministry said that Hungary’s embassy in New Delhi has contacted local authorities through Hungary’s honorary consul in Nepal. ‘Rescue operations are currently under way on a large scale,’ the ministry added.

Flash floods swept through several villages in northeastern Nepal on Wednesday, killing more than 150 people, according to local authorities and damaging roads, bridges and energy infrastructure in areas near the Tibetan border.
