Police in Budapest checked more than 11,000 people, arrested 252 and detained 195 others during the first month of an expanded public-security operation, the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) said on Tuesday.
Police also carried out 64 security measures during the operation, which was launched in mid-July following developments and experiences from previous months.
The targeted public-space checks were conducted at several locations across Budapest based on public-security data and reports from residents and local governments. Officers from the BRFK, the Rapid Response Police, municipal law-enforcement bodies, civil guards and other partners took part in the operation, police said.
Those arrested or detained included suspects in robbery, drug-related offences, disorderly conduct and theft cases. Police also took action against wanted individuals and motorists suspected of driving under the influence.
Officers issued on-the-spot fines in 284 cases, while administrative fines were also imposed. Police filed reports for suspected misdemeanours in 130 cases and criminal complaints in a further 111 cases.
Police said security measures were also carried out in cases involving people who needed medical assistance.
The BRFK stressed that problems encountered in public spaces often have complex social, welfare and health-related causes. Addressing them over the long term therefore requires solutions extending beyond law enforcement measures, it said.
The BRFK regularly consults the Ministry of Social and Family Affairs, the Budapest municipal government and organizations involved in social services, and is actively involved in developing joint solutions, the statement said.
Based on the experience of the past month, targeted public-space checks will continue, police said.
