A movie-like police chase unfolded on 20 August along the northern shore of Lake Balaton after the driver of a Mercedes refused to stop for police. Officers eventually fired targeted shots at the vehicle’s tyres, but it failed to bring the driver to a halt. During the pursuit, the fleeing man rammed several police cars before the chase finally ended in Balatonfüred, Hungary. Four police officers sustained minor injuries.
Police have since released video footage of the dramatic pursuit.
As the Hungarian news site Index.hu reprots, a citizen alerted police in the late afternoon on Thursday, 20 August (a national holiday in Hungary) after noticing a passenger car driving erratically and swerving between lanes on Route 71 near the 58-kilometre marker.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver sped away, prompting several police units to join the pursuit. During the chase, the fleeing driver repeatedly rammed police vehicles as he attempted to escape.

Police eventually fired targeted shots at the Mercedes’ tyres, but the driver continued fleeing—unsurprisingly, as shooting at tyres is generally ineffective and dangerous. hence it is never done by police in the United States. According to the local news site Veol, he was likely under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
The man continued speeding through the area, posing a constant danger to motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists, according to authorities. Fortunately, he did not collide with any civilians during the pursuit.
The chase finally came to an end on Vázsonyi Road in Balatonfüred after the driver lost control of the Mercedes and crashed into a utility pole. Four police officers sustained minor injuries during the operation. Following the crash, the driver was transported to a hospital in the nearby city of Győr.
