Chinese automotive manufacturer BYD continued its rapid expansion in Hungary during the first half of 2026, becoming the country’s best-selling brand in the new-energy vehicle (NEV) segment.
According to figures released by BYD Hungary on Thursday, the company sold 2,126 passenger vehicles between January and June, representing a 143.8 per cent increase compared with the same period a year earlier.
The performance placed BYD at the top of Hungary’s NEV market, a category that combines fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid models.
The company also emerged as the leading player in the battery-electric vehicle (BEV) segment, selling 1,302 fully electric cars and capturing a 17.37 per cent market share.
Across the overall Hungarian passenger car market, BYD ranked 11th among all brands with a 2.84 per cent market share. When adjusted for vehicle withdrawals and focusing only on cars that remain in Hungary’s domestic fleet, the manufacturer moved into the national top 10, securing ninth place with a 3.38 per cent market share.
BYD attributed its growth to increasing demand for its electric vehicle platform built around the company’s proprietary Blade Battery technology, as well as its Super DM plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The company said its goal is to make electric mobility more accessible and attractive to Hungarian families and businesses through innovative vehicle technologies.
BYD has also continued to expand its sales and service network across Hungary. As of July 2026, the brand operates 17 sales locations and 13 service centres nationwide.
In addition to multiple sites in Budapest, BYD now maintains a presence in Békéscsaba, Debrecen, Győr, Jászberény, Kaposvár, Kecskemét, Nyíregyháza, Pécs, Szeged, Székesfehérvár, Szekszárd and Zalaegerszeg. The opening of another sales outlet in the capital has further strengthened the company’s position in the Budapest market.
BYD said it aims to be regarded as a European manufacturer within five years. Supporting that ambition are the company’s European headquarters and research and development operations in Budapest, as well as its new passenger vehicle factory currently under construction in Szeged.
The multinational high-tech company entered Hungary’s passenger car market in the second half of 2023. It had already established a manufacturing presence in the country through its bus factory in Komárom and facilities in Páty and Fót.
Last year, BYD relocated its European headquarters to Budapest, where its European research and development centre is also based.
