US Vice President JD Vance delivered a strong political message during a joint press conference with Viktor Orbán in Budapest, describing cooperation between the two countries as a defence of Western civilization. He also raised concerns about foreign interference ahead of Hungary’s upcoming election, praising Orbán as the ‘most important leader’ in Europe.

US Vice President JD Vance and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán held a joint press conference in Budapest on 7 April, signalling a deepening ‘civilizational alliance’ between the United States and Hungary, while also weighing in on the country’s upcoming parliamentary elections and warning of foreign interference.

Opening the press conference, Orbán described US–Hungarian relations as entering a new phase following Donald Trump’s return to the White House. ‘With President Trump’s election, a golden age has begun in our relations,’ he said, pointing to record levels of economic cooperation and expanding ties in the space and defence industries. According to the prime minister, bilateral trade has increased by 50 per cent, with multiple new US investments announced in recent months.

Orbán framed the meeting as an opportunity to align on broader strategic and ideological questions, listing migration, gender ideology, family policy, and global security as key areas of cooperation. ‘This meeting allowed us to discuss the most important issues affecting Western civilization,’ he said.

Vance echoed this framing, placing the partnership in explicitly civilizational terms. ‘What the United States and Hungary represent under the leadership of Donald Trump and Viktor Orbán is the defence of Western civilization,’ he said, citing shared positions on education, family policy, energy security, freedom of speech, and the protection of the vulnerable.

The US vice president also offered strong personal praise for Orbán, calling him ‘the most important leader in Europe’ on issues of energy security and independence. ‘Certain leaders talk about the energy crisis, but they would only need to follow Viktor Orbán’s policies,’ he added.

The press conference took place just days before Hungary’s parliamentary elections, and both leaders addressed the political stakes. Vance stated that Washington would cooperate with any future Hungarian government but made clear his expectations for the outcome. ‘Whoever wins the election, we will work with them because we love the Hungarian people—but I am confident that Viktor Orbán will win,’ he said.

‘What is happening is one of the worst examples of foreign interference I have ever seen’

At the same time, he sharply criticized what he described as external pressure on Hungary. ‘What is happening is one of the worst examples of foreign interference I have ever seen,’ Vance said, accusing ‘Brussels bureaucrats’ of attempting to weaken Hungary economically and undermine its energy independence. He urged voters to focus on national interests rather than ideological labels: ‘Do not ask who is pro-Europe or anti-Europe…ask who stands with the Hungarian people.’

Orbán likewise raised concerns about foreign interference in Hungary’s domestic affairs, stating that he had briefed the US vice president on alleged intelligence activities targeting the country.

Vance went further, suggesting that ‘elements within the Ukrainian intelligence services’ had attempted to influence both US and Hungarian elections, though he added that the priority should remain ending the war. ‘We must focus on solving the problems of the people we represent…it is in our interest that the war ends as soon as possible,’ he said.

The war in Ukraine featured prominently in the discussion, with both leaders emphasizing the need for diplomacy. Orbán described the conflict as ‘a war between two Christian countries on European soil’ and reiterated Hungary’s call for an immediate ceasefire. He also recalled that Budapest had been proposed as a potential venue for a US–Russia peace summit, adding that preparatory discussions had already taken place.

Vance supported these efforts, arguing that both Trump and Orbán had done more than any other leaders to advance peace. ‘The two leaders who have done the most to ease this conflict are Donald Trump and Viktor Orbán,’ he said, adding that Orbán had been ‘far more constructive’ than many of his counterparts.

Energy security emerged as another central theme. Orbán warned that Europe is heading towards ‘the most serious energy crisis in its history,’ criticizing the EU’s approach to the war and sanctions policy. ‘That strategy has failed,’ he said, arguing that attempts to economically weaken Russia had instead strengthened its position due to its vast natural resources.

The Hungarian prime minister also accused Ukraine of targeting Hungary’s energy supply routes, including disruptions to oil deliveries ahead of the election, which he linked to efforts to influence the outcome.
